Pool Opening Tips

For in ground pools:

1. Clean your cover before removing from the pool. If you need to remove water, place a board under the pump to avoid draining your pool. Yes, pumps can pull water through the covers.

2. If not opening your pool til May or early June, add one quart of Combat Extra algaecide per 20,000 gallons. Mix with water and pour through the cover, or under a corner.

3. If your filter has a WASTE mode, manually vacuum all debris using this mode.

4. Do NOT use a robotic or Polaris type pool cleaner to clean your pool upon opening. The heavy debris will only be stirred up, contaminating your cleaner, and possibly causing damage to the cleaner.

5. If your pool is green, use 1 lb. of TurboShock per 2500 gallons. Do NOT use algaecide. Algaecides prevent algae from growing. Once your pool is green, you need shock. If your water is clear, use 1 lb. per 5000 gallons. This is for opening purposes only.

6. Bring a water sample for a FREE analysis. We can also discuss what you need to do specifically for your pool. Bring photos if necessary.

7. When trying to prime the pump, put your filter in the RECIRCULATE mode if available, and only use the main drain if you have valves to isolate it. Pour a five gallon bucket of water in the front of the pump – do not use a hose to fill the basket housing. Once running, you can begin vacuuming or return the multiport valve to FILTER mode.

8. Do NOT add any chemicals if you will be vacuuming to WASTE or lowering your water level as you’ll only be wasting the chemicals.

9. Water level should be kept anywhere between 1/2 to 2/3 up the skimmer with just enough room for surface debris to float into the skimmer. Water levels higher than the skimmer are okay and do not strain your pump. You simply lose the ability to remove surface debris.

For ABOVE GROUND pools:

1. Remove all debris and water from the ool cover. To avoid pumping water from your pool, place a board under any pump used to remove excess cover water. There are leaf rakes for your pole to assist removing leaves and other large debris.

3. Get help removing your cover to avoid dumping dirt and other debris into your crystal clear water.
